Unlock Opportunities at Key Club!

Juniors Isabel Gates, Lindsey Shaw, and Kaitlan Harbaugh pose as representatives of the Key Club.

What is the Key Club? Why is it so important? That is what I was trying to figure out as I walked into their club in Room 301. They invited me in with open arms! The first person I interviewed was Sophia Bird, a freshman at Gig Harbor High School.

“At the first meeting, we received dates for upcoming events and we learned a little more about Key Club International and the Kiwanis Group. We haven’t talked a lot about goals yet, but we are fundraising throughout the year for the Eliminate Project.”

Curious about the club, I asked Bird why she joined Key Club.

“I joined because I want to help the community and give back. I am excited for D-CON which is the district convention because I really want to meet other people in our district who enjoy service. District 34 includes nine high schools around the Puget Sound area.” She was really excited about Key Club!

Then, I interviewed freshman Kayla Atkins, asking her what her favorite part of the club was.

“My favorite part about Key Club is that my friends are there with me. Key Club is the key to success!

— Kayla Atkins

I ran into Erin Arviso and she was ecstatic about Key Club. “‘We don’t make keys, we open doors!’”

The president of Key Club is Lindsey Shaw, the treasurer is Kaitlan Harbaugh, the secretary is Libby Verneist, our vice president is Isabel Gates, and our editor is Faith Dewitz. The district that Key Club is in has 45 divisions, 332 clubs, and 12,570 members! The mascot is Mortimer Moose, their color is fuchsia pink, and the motto is “Proud ‘N’ willing to serve!”.  Key Club meets every Thursday in Mrs. Blanchard’s Room 301, after school, for 40 minutes, where they discuss community service projects to help our community.

After the meeting, Atkins said “the first meeting was very informational. We learned all about the club and its values. I like Key club a lot so far because the people seem very welcoming. I’m in Key club to help out the community.”

In the second meeting, they talked about upcoming events and played a rock paper scissors championship, the sweet prize was candy! It was a happy and fun meeting that I highly recommend. I mean, who doesn’t what to spend times with friends, eating candy and helping others? Key Club is open to everyone and they are helping Gig Harbor be the best it can be!
