After Hurricane Maria hit, it caused destruction of homes, trees, and more. The hurricane made Puerto Rico lose a lot of its power. Many people did not get to the drug store in time because there was not enough gas at gas stations. As a result, many people suffered, leading to the deaths of many. The problem was Puerto Rico was suffering from a lack of attention from the United States. “On the ground, Puerto Rico remains a patchwork of desperate fixes, with 3.4 million people improvising ways to get much-needed medicine” (LUIS FERRÉ-SADURNÍFRANCES ROBLES and LIZETTE ALVAREZ). Our president, Donald Trump did not send immediate attention to Puerto Rico. Instead he imitated its people’s accents as if the U.S. had no involvement with the “foreign country” when in facct, Puerto Rico is a United States territory.

The Armed Force goes by different mottos all leading to one conclusion; lead and protect the rights of the United States. “Always ready, always there. Whatever it takes. Honor, courage, commitment”(U.S. Armed forces mottos). This shows that each branch of the military takes an oath to protect citizens in trouble no matter how dangerous the situation. However, “Within seven days, the United States had 17 ships, 48 helicopters, 10,000 sailors, Marines and troops both afloat and ashore with 12 fixed-wing aircraft flying in.” (Richard Parker) It took the U.S. seven days to respond to the natural disaster. The amazing part about this is we have a huge military but because our President did not send immediate attention, many died.

Still Puerto Rico’s waters are toxic and many are still dying. Puerto Rico deserves the same response that other countries and states get when in trouble.
