Thanksgiving Traditions

Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate and give thanks for what we have. From eating turkey to spending time with family, we decorate our houses with warming fall colors, but there are many unique traditions that the students of GHHS celebrate in their own homes.

People across the country celebrate this uniquely American holiday in their homes by acting as master chefs for a day, but Junior Sanda Gugin’s family has a different take on the holiday. Every year for Thanksgiving, her family goes out to a hotel to eat. “My mom doesn’t like cooking,” said Sanda. Almost the opposite is true for Senior Emma Backstein during the holidays, her family goes full out when it comes to cooking dinner. Every year, rainbow jello is for dessert! Similarly, when Senior Taylor Horn’s family cooks dinner, they always break the wishbone in the turkey. “I usually lose, I don’t think I’ve ever won!” exclaimed Taylor mid-interview.

I enjoyed it. My favorite was eating pumpkin pie. I had never had it before.

While students who have grown up in America have become accustomed to celebrating with home-made pies and stuffing on a yearly basis, Junior, and foreign exchange student from Switzerland, Michal Wipf, celebrated her first Thanksgiving this week. She said it was very similar to what she has seen in many American movies. “I enjoyed it. My favorite was eating pumpkin pie. I had never had it before,” she stated enthusiastically.

Overall, Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate with friends and family. No matter how strange or outrageous your traditions are, remember to give thanks for all you have and spend time with loved ones.
