The Cross-Ex Debate team works after school, discussing issues and points.

If the internet has taught me anything it’s that people love to debate. They may not be very good at it but it seems to be part of human nature to argue and try to prove our point right. Actually being good at debate however is very difficult, but with a lot of practice one can get pretty amazing at fleshing out their point of view. This is what the GHHS Cross-Ex Debate team is all about. Now that Debate actually a class offered here at the school, teachers can teach kids three forms of debate; Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglas and Cross-Ex. Each has their own team that meets after school on different days and works independently of the other teams. I got the chance to sit down with a couple of the members of the Cross-Ex team and asked them a few questions.

“It helps me to develop my critical thinking and research skills.” declared Senior Julianna Magee. All of the debate kids do seem rather intelligent I must admit.

“I think debate is important because it spreads awareness on how the policy making system actually works, and how to implement policy, it also improves your analytical skills in general which is never a bad thing, plus college apps!” Senior Sierra Herzberger vocalizes at a cheetah-like speed. “I won a Teddy Bear at the last tournament and no one can take that away from me!”

Debate is a really fun way to develop your research and speaking skills. It may seem incredibly intimidating at first but it can actually be really rewarding. Plus there’s three different types so you can do the form of debate that works best for you. So if you need an English or Performing arts elective I would highly recommend it! You could even win a Teddy Bear!
