Top Ten Songs of 2015

The year of 2015 was a record breaking year of music. From Bruno Mars, to Taylor Swift, the year never lacked in talent. Here is a roundup of the top songs of the year!

  1. Uptown Funk – Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars

This song was the top song of 2015 for 13 weeks, according to Billboard’s Hot 100, and is one of only 10 singles ever to reach this accomplishment. Mark Ronson directed Uptown Funk and it has an 80’s vibe to it. The music video currently has 1 billion views on Youtube, featuring Bruno Mars dances around town, getting his shoes and hair done, while also staying classy. An artist, Snezana Miskovic, who sings under the name Viktorija, claimed plagiarism and accused Mars and Ronson of stealing “80 per cent” of her track Ulice Mracne Nisu Za Devojke. This is translated, in English, as “English Dark Streets Are Not For Girls”. The two songs are very similar and there has been much controversy over these two.

  1. Sugar – Maroon 5

An emotional song that accumulated to a number one title on the Billboard ranking, this song was written about Adam’s feelings for a girl, and how much he wants to be with her. In the 900 million view music video, Maroon 5 surprises couples on their wedding day all over Los Angeles. However, the band has received many complaints about “the whole thing being staged”.   1. Thinking Out Loud – Ed Sheeran

In this video, Ed and Brittany Cherry Ballroom dance. The song talks about his feelings and thoughts about a relationship he had. Thinking Out Loud is one of my favorite tracks on the album, if not my favorite,” Sheeran said in a press release about the video. “It’s a great one to perform live and means a lot to me. I wanted the video to be a little different, so I opted for ballroom dancing. I had lessons for five hours a day when I was on my U.S. tour last month.” It is a sweet song with elegant moves and a well made subject.

  1. Shut up and Dance – Walk the Moon

This song is about living in the moment and seizing the day. It is about the crazy whirlwind of love, life and time. Lauren Taft and Nicholas Petricca dance, when Lauren’s character tells him to “shut up and dance”.“‘Shut Up and Dance’ is based on a true story,” says singer Nicholas Petricca. “While we were out in L.A. actually writing for the record, Talking Is Hard, we hit a roadblock writing the song that would become Shut Up and Dance; we didn’t have the chorus. We went out to blow off some steam at this awesome dance club and there was a girl there with a backless dress and beat up red Chucks who actually told me to shut up and dance with her.” The music video currently has 100 million views.

This music video and song are making fun of all the haters who thinks that she is a serial dater. She describes what the media thinks of her, and shows them that she isn’t like that. “Blank Space” is referring to a blank area on a piece of paper, where someone writes down a name… and she makes it seem like there are many. Her creative style and spunky personality brings together a catchy tune, to remind the world that she really isn’t just the girl that won 11 American Music Awards and seven Grammy Awards. The music video currently has 1.3 billion views on Youtube.

  1. Lips Are Movin’ – Meghan Trainor

Meghan Trainor’s hit, Lips Are Moving, talks about a past relationship, in which the guy cheated and lied to her. The vintage vibe, just like all of her songs, and upbeat tone makes this song a must listen to. Trainor has become an icon of women empowerment and body image in the media, her music video has over 300 million views, and the word is out! 

  1. Can’t Feel my Face – The Weeknd

What a year it was for Abel Tesfaye, otherwise known as The Weeknd. While Can’t Feel my Face was his first #1 hit song in the US, his previous works with Ariana Grande in Love me HarderThe Hills, and Earned It all charted to the Top Ten at one point in 2015. As one of the many bizarre videos by The Weeknd, Can’t Feel my Face features Tesfaye on fire after the crowd of a smoky club are fed up with his performance.

  1. Watch Me – Silento

This song brought us the whip and nae nae. It is a crazy song that inspired many teens to dance together in a two step dance. Many believe that this will truly be remembered forever. While Watch Me was the 17 year old Atlanta rapper’s first song, it sure made an impact on the young generation, as it earned Silento a record with Capitol Records and gave the nation a dance fad.

  1. See You Again – Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth

The 1.3 billion view music video shows scenes from Furious 7 and views of the sea and hills.  There are many ties to the movie, as it was a main song, including many scenes of Paul Walker. The powerful message of the song can resonate with any fan of the Fast and Furious franchise. The song debuted at #100 on the Billboard Charts, but within five weeks, it rose to #1, which became the fastest leap to #1 ever. 

  1. Lean On – Major Lazer & DJ Snake Featuring M0

This song has an upbeat tempo and a happy tune. In the video, Major Lazer & DJ Snake are in India and dancing. It is a catchy tune and understandable why so many people like it. According to SongFacts, it surpassed Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud for the most streamed song of all time with 526 million plays worldwide. The music video currently has 970 million views.
