Honoring Alan Rickman

And it’s a human need to be told stories. The more we’re governed by idiots and have no control over our destinies, the more we need to tell stories to each other about who we are, why we are, where we come from, and what might be possible.

— Alan Rickman

The beloved actor, Alan Rickman, died on Thursday January 14th, at age 69. Contrary to his character, Snape from the Harry Potter series, he once said, “I think there should be laughs in everything. Sometimes, it’s a slammed door, a pie in the face or just a recognition of our frailties.” He also mentioned his role in Harry Potter and what he saw in it.

“Three children have become adults since a phone call with Jo Rowling, containing one small clue, persuaded me that there was more to Snape than an unchanging costume, and that even though only three of the books were out at that time, she held the entire massive but delicate narrative in the surest of hands.”

Rickman starred in over 50 movies, including Alice and Wonderland, the Harry Potter series, Romeo and Juliet, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Die Hard, Alice In Wonderland: Through The Looking Glass, The Wildest Dream and Dust and Love Actually.

Junior, Michael Berry, commented that “In Harry Potter, Alan did a superb job at playing a “bad guy”, but then turning out to be good. In all of his movies, he portrays different characters well and is an incredible actor. He changed a lot of lives through his works and it is a shame that he had to go so soon. His style is unique and one of a kind. The most memorable scene of his is when he dies in Harry Potter. This scene shows how much of a good person he is. It is revealed that he gave his life to protecting Harry, and saving the little bit of Harry’s mom that he sees in Harry. He did everything for his love of Harry’s mom. The quote that will stick with me forever is “always”. It is so simple, but it is so diverse and meaningful. I wish I could have met this wonderful person.”

Freshman, Mabelle Harnacker, said, “ He was a great actor and developed his characters well. Alan was very good at being creepy, and I would describe his style of acting as mysterious. I also will forever remember the scene in which Snape dies. It was so sad and such a surprise twist. In the beginning, everyone disliked Snape, but then at the last moment, you saw how kind of a person he really was. My favorite quote of Alan’s is: “Weasley’s wand causes devastation with the simplest spells. We’ll be sending Potter to the hospital wing in a matchbox.” Rest in peace Alan Rickman. You will forever be missed.”

Junior, Nick Guardia, said, “Alan Rickman always knew how to carry himself well and know how he should play the character. He was a really good actor and shouldn’t have died so early. His style of acting was professional, shakespearean and aggressive. The scene I remember most is of Snape forcing Harry to drink the polyjuice potion, a.k.a. truth serum, in Harry Potter.”

Just like most of us, he doubted himself before his scenes. “I get stage fright and gremlins in my head saying: ‘You’re going to forget your lines’.” Alan Rickman also admitted to how weird it is to see himself on screen. “It’s a nightmare to sit and watch a film that I’m in. There’s a horrible inescapability to it.” Alan Rickman has touched the lives of many and will always be missed. Rest in peace, Alan Rickman.
