March Madness Sweet Sixteen
It is called March Madness for a reason. This year more double digit seeds won in the first round than ever before. A total of 10 double digit seeds advanced beating the record on nine back in 2001 and 2012.
This year’s March Madness continued to impress when a 13, 14, and a 15 seed all won on the same day. There have been instances when all three won in the first round but never on the same day.
Out of all 10 of the double digit seeds to win i the first round, only two advanced to the sweet sixteen. 11 seeded Gonzaga knocked off number 3 seeded Utah in a major second round upset while 10 seeded Syracuse took care of business against number 15 seeded Middle Tennessee State.
Probably the most entertaining game in terms of finishes was the Round of 32 matchup between the 11 seeded Northern Iowa and 3 seeded Texas A&M. UNI carried momentum from a game-winning half-court buzzer beater to dominate Texas A&M most of the game. With 44 seconds left in the game Texas A&M was down by 12 points. In those 44 seconds they made six field goals, forced 4 turnovers, and most importantly tied the game. Texas A&M would go on to win the game in 2OT.
No other college basketball team has come back from that big of a deficit within a minute to play. Experts have even said that the odds the Texas A&M winning that game with a minute to go was 3,000 to 1. This goes on to prove why they call it March Madness.
