PLAYERS Tournament to begin
This week on the PGA tour 142 of the best golfers in the world assemble on the best field of the year for the annual PLAYERS tournament.
Around this time every year pundits and golf junkies begin to debate if the PLAYERS should became golf’s 5th major and it’s commonly discussed as the “players” Major because many of the golfers highlight this event on their calendar every year. Major or not, PLAYERS is one of the best tournaments of the year with arguably the best and most intimidating finish in Golf. The world’s golfers face a tough challenge at TPC Sawgrass, one of the toughest tests in golf poses no advantage to any golfer.

Last year was regarded as one of the best PLAYERS ever with Rickie Fowler scoring 6 under par in the final six holes birding 4 of the 6 including the par 3 Island Green, 17th and an Eagle on the Par 5 16th forcing a playoff with Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner. On the second playoff hole, the 17th Kisner and Fowler both made birdies but Garcia failed to keep up knocking him out of contention with a par at 18, they then played the 17th again and Rickie Fowler hit the shot of the tournament hitting his tee shot to within 5 feet of the cup, making birdie to win the tournament.
This changed people’s perception of Rickie Fowler previously voted by the tour as the most overrated player in golf, he now had won one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments. Finishes and stories like these are what make the PLAYER’s great, and expect more of the same this week.
Two players the Sound Newspaper has to win the tournament are England’s Justin Rose, and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy.
Rose is coming off of a 3rd place finish last week falling a shot behind the playoff. Tee to Green he was miles ahead of the field with his driver his irons and around the greens, but his putter let him down. He recently switched to the claw putting grip and is still trying to figure it out completely but once he does the tour better look out. That’s why we at the Sound think he’s a great pick for this week with some of the best ball striking on tour if he gets his putter hot, he has a very good chance to win his first PLAYERS championship.
The other pick is Rory McIlroy and what needs to be said about this guy, he’s starting to heat up with a final round of 66 at the Wells Fargo finishing Tied for 4th. He hits the ball a mile off the tee and his irons are impeccable. If it all clicks this weekend I believe it is Rory’s tournament to lose. The tournament starts tomorrow with the first group of players teeing off at 4:15am our time and it goes through Sunday, Catch it on TV on the Golf Channel Thursday and Friday and NBC on Saturday and Championship Sunday, be sure to tune in.
