Girl’s Lacrosse Has Just Gotten More Interesting

It seems that all it takes is two teams, a small rubber ball, and a long stick called a crosse, but this year’s newly introduced spring club sport, has made it a little bit more interesting. The girls Lacrosse team of the Peninsula School District Club, is now offering students from Gig Harbor High and Peninsula High a chance to unite as a single team, to compete in this exhilarating sport. If you thought you weren’t a fan before, prepare to have your mind changed by the end of this article.

Fun Fact!

Lacrosse originated in what is now Canada, being initiated by Native American tribes who inhabited the eastern woodlands and the plains. It was referred to as “The Creator’s Game,” as it was presumably dedicated to the Native Americans’ creator, and played a significant role in their lives. Those who participated in the game did so as warriors, to bring honor and glory to their tribes. After the discovery of this land by the Europeans, they found they enjoyed the sport as well, so they introduced it to their own culture, after of course making a few changes to create the same sport that many enjoy today.

The object of the game is quite similar to the objective of soccer; the players attempt to shoot the ball into the opponent’s goal, past the goalie. They do so by using the crosse to catch and pass the ball. The following is an interview with Sarah Sinsey, one of the team captains for the team:

  1. How long have you been playing lacrosse?

Answer: “This is my seventh year playing lacrosse.”

  1. How does the game work?

Answer: “The game is pretty simple. There are twelve players on the field, (one goalie, four attack, three midfield, and four defenders.) The game begins with the draw where the ball is thrown in the air and the midfielders try to get it. Then we pass it around and try to score a goal without one of the other team’s defenders causing a turnover.”

  1. What was your reaction to the creation of the new team?

Answer: “I was really happy when I heard the PSD team was going to happen this year because that means I can get a varsity letter and have all the benefits of a school sport (transportation, field space, etc.)”

  1. How is it working together with Peninsula on the same team?

Answer: “We’ve all been on the same team in the past, and it’s really nice getting to know all these really cool people that I wouldn’t otherwise meet because they go to a different school.”

  1. What is your favorite part about the sport?

Answer: “My favorite part is seeing all of our hard work coming together on the field, like executing a play perfectly or moving the ball down the field quickly and easily.”

  1. If you had to choose three words to describe lacrosse, what would they be?

Answer: Fast, aggressive, and smart.

  1. Why should other students come and see you play?

Answer: “It’s a lot of fun! The game is very interesting to watch because of the fast paced nature of the game and all of the strategy that comes with it. Come support us!”
Join in the excitement and come support the girls lacrosse team! The games are typically scheduled during the week from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Home games are played at Sehmel Homestead Park.
