Opinion: Should Security Be Able To Search Cars?
One thing many students do not know is that school security can search your car if they have probable cause to do so. Probable cause includes if they see illegal or restricted items in open view in a car as well as word of mouth from a student to an adult. We asked some students around the school if this should be the case. So the question is: should school security be allowed to search your cars?
Nick Toyama said, “I have nothing to hide. If there is probable cause I’m okay with them searching cars.”
Michael Kolar said, “Yeah because there are some students that hide drugs in their cars.”
Lauren Hemley said, “No because it is an invasion of privacy and should be treated like how cops need a warrant.”
Meagann Russell said, “If they have probable cause, they should be able to search cars. But not on just suspicion you may have something, because they all have some privacy. Items that are in our cars are not on our person and are no threat to anyone.”
Maddie Garthe said, “I don’t think schools should be allowed to search our cars. There is a double standard when it comes to our cars. We are not allowed to go hang out in our vehicles during the school day because it is considered “off campus” and “unsafe.” But when it comes to the school wanting to search our cars they magically are considered “on campus.” If we’re not allowed to be out there they shouldn’t be either.”
