One of the most rare and exciting things about a theater performance is getting a glimpse behind the scenes. This year, the drama class will perform “The Crayon Chronicles” for Discovery elementary students. The performance is about the two books, The Day the Crayons Quit and The Day the Crayons Came Home by Drew Daywalt, beginning with the audition process and ending with a spectacular show for the children of Discovery to watch.
The auditions were a fun and exciting time for all of the students, but with the excitement comes nerves. “I might feel nervous; if I am, I feel them right up until I walk onto the stage. Like being on the block for a swim, on the block I’m nervous, but the second I’m off, I’m calm.” Olivia O’Berry (10) stated. Auditions can be stressful, but the aftermath of creating a show makes it all worth it. “To practice for auditions, I worked with friends; we went over our parts over and over until we had them memorized. The auditions were stressful, but good practice at speaking comfortably in front of people.” Sarah Johansen (9) stated.
Once the auditions were over and the actors and actresses were assigned roles based on their character, the production of the show started. Everyone was able to pick behind-the-scenes roles such as props, wardrobe, and lighting. Others chose a more in-depth role of creating all of the big props on stage, such as a crayon box for the characters to be in. “I like getting to construct and create different parts of the props,“ Vixen Davis (9) stated. Davis has taken on the role of making all of the big props, such as painting and building the crayon box by hand. “My favorite part about wardrobe is that the other people in the group are really fun and easy to work with, and it’s just a fun job.” Hadiah Hallam (9) a wardrobe member stated.
For all the students who want to get started or continue drama throughout the years. The Gig Harbor Drama program is a fun and exciting experience for everyone. “To others wanting to join, it is a great experience and fun for anyone! I one hundred percent recommend drama. There is a place for everyone, and we are an amazing community. It’s also a fun way to express yourself!” Evie Bandoli (9) exclaimed. Payton Beleich (9) also encouraged everyone to try out the drama class. “This experience is a ten out of ten and awesome. I love bonding with everyone, and everyone is so unique and similar at the same time. Go ahead and join; it is a great way to make friends and bond!”
