A tragic event has struck the JROTC students, mostly affecting the NS4’s. The U.S., the Navy, and the community at large mourned the passing of Lieutenant Commander Hood. Known for his steadfast leadership, unwavering commitment to duty, and genuine care for the wellbeing of his sailors, Commander Hood’s death marks the end of a chapter for his comrades, his students, and all who knew him.
Commander Hood’s service in the Navy spanned over two decades, during which he made significant contributions to both operational readiness and mentoring young officers. His career was marked by his exceptional leadership aboard various naval vessels, where he not only commanded respect but also cultivated an environment of trust and camaraderie. Those who served with him often recalled his calm demeanor in the face of adversity, his strategic mindset, and his deep understanding of the responsibilities that come with military leadership. One of the NS4’s, Paige Neil (11), said, “Commander Hood’s passing has deeply affected many of the NS4’s in the company because he was their original teacher for ROTC and started them on their path. Many of us, including me, only knew him for a little over a year, but he still made a big impact on our success in the company; he gave me the opportunity to write the first newsletter for the company and was very supportive of every cadet in the company. It’s very sad to have him gone, but we all hope he’s in a better place.”
Beyond his role as a commander, Hood was a mentor to countless younger officers, instilling in them the values of integrity, service, and selflessness. He was known for his open-door policy, always ready to offer advice or a listening ear to those who sought his guidance. His leadership extended beyond the formalities of rank and position; Hood genuinely cared for his people, taking the time to understand their aspirations and challenges. One of the cadets explained that losing Commander Hood was like losing a family member.
While his death leaves a void, it also serves as a reminder of the enduring impact one individual can have on an entire community. His leadership and legacy will continue to inspire future generations of officers, who will carry forward the lessons he imparted. In a final tribute to Commander Hood, the Navy has planned a memorial service where his colleagues and students alike will gather to honor his life and service. As Grayson Mckee (12) summed up: “Commander Hood’s passing is a great loss, but his example will continue to guide us. We will carry his legacy with us as we move forward in our careers, striving to live up to the standards he set. Commander Hood’s life was one of service, leadership, and integrity. His legacy will continue to resonate in the hearts and minds of all who had the honor to serve with him.”
