Unified Basketball Dominates in Tournament

The Gig Harbor Unified Basketball team has returned this year after dominating the court last season with an undefeated winning streak, proving their unbeatable teamwork and skill. Unified Basketball gives opportunities to Gig Harbor students of all abilities to be a part of a team, offering an inclusive environment where students can join together to achieve one goal. Unified basketball is more than an opportunity to play basketball; it is an opportunity to be part of a caring community that forms bonds and promotes unity. The positive outcomes go beyond the athletic aspect of the game, teaching collaboration, leadership, and inclusivity.

Undefeated in both last season and this season, the Gig Harbor Unified team is having a blast as they power through each game. This past Saturday, on January 18th, the team played in the Unified Basketball Tournament. Gig Harbor was coming up short in points for the first half of the game, but with perseverance and a handful of key plays from the team, they pulled ahead just in time to win the game, scoring 53-38. One team member, Cooper Giovannini (10), said, “It was fun to see the enjoyment as a team and to see us get another win to keep our undefeated winning streak.”

Ty Rushforth (12) remarked that his favorite part of being a part of the Unified basketball team is being able to help people who don’t always get a chance to play in front of big crowds, and he says, “I think that it’s really cool to see them score and have so many fans cheering them on.” The support from the fans is truly inspiring as friends and family come together from all around to see these students collaborate in a team that is so much bigger than basketball. Many of the players’ favorite parts were the support from their families. Mia Magee (12) said her favorite part of the tournament was her uncle coming all the way from New York to see her play.

The Unified Basketball team has had so many amazing games and made so many memories, and we’re so excited to see the team grow and develop as they finish off the rest of this season!
