Student Journalists Needed!

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

– The First Amendment of the United States Constitution

The freedom of speech and the press is one of the most significant freedoms that the American people enjoy. To tell stories how they are, to express opinions in their pure, unfiltered forms, and to bring light to people and events that deserve recognition. Freedom of the press gives the people voices. What the people choose to do with their voices has the potential to create incredible impact upon society as a whole, but also upon the individuals that compose their society.

From reporting on sports seasons and highlighting talented athletes to recognizing days set apart as memorials, our school newspaper has grown in its capacity to be a record of our history over the last several years. It has highlighted the tragic deaths of valuable, extraordinary individuals from our school, dived into the history of our school, and explored human nature, as well as providing uplifting, comical reports of ridiculous happenings and providing reports and reviews on popular media, among numerous other topics. It doesn’t matter who you are; the goal of The Sound is to provide something for everyone, unifying the community. It is growing as a way to document the history of our school, to uplift and inspire the community, to teach, and to give students and staff members the credit they deserve.

Unfortunately, due to the adviser stipend being cut and likely miscommunication surrounding class scheduling, the option to take Newspaper Publications as a class in the 2025-2026 school year has been removed. This leaves the Sound in a difficult position. While the budget for the newspaper and momentum for an even more successful website and a newfangled app remain, the Sound is lacking a staff to write articles and to be the voices.

If you are a student who enjoys writing, whether it be stories, essays, or articles, we need your help! We are looking for student journalists to be on our staff. Whether you want to go to sports games and give insights into our athletics, give advice in a column, take photos for our stories, report on recent events, review movies, or anything else, we want you on our staff! If you have or are interested in starting a podcast, if you write an essay you’re especially proud of, or if you have any desire to pursue a career in English, we encourage you to reach out and join our staff.

This year, due to a lack of class time, we will organize our staff largely remotely and ask journalists to communicate via technology in order to be most efficient and to accommodate any other responsibilities that journalists may have. Assistance and training will be provided as necessary.

The Sound is excited for an incredible year of content. Each week of the year there has been so much to cover, and we need your help! If you would like your work published and/or to be a member of our staff, please reach out to editor Maya Holmes at [email protected].
