Have you ever wondered what situation our environment is in, and what you can do to help? Have you ever wanted to give back to your community in a unique way? Or are you just in need of a solid extra-curricular activity?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then GHECO (Gig Harbor Environmental & Community Outreach) would be an excellent fit!

GHECO is a club that has been in the school for over 20 years, and takes part in numerous projects around the community.

Take, for example, the water bottle filler in the commons. This is a new installment that GHECO pushed last year, and is saving about 2000 water bottles a month! That’s a lot of plastic.

Kristin Deeds, a current senior who has been involved in the club since she was a freshman, says, “Though it changes throughout the year, there are usually between ten and thirty members involved in the club.”

This means that GHECO is staying involved, and you will have no trouble interacting with people during projects. I asked senior member Emily Davis on the various projects GHECO involves in.

“Another project we do is the yearly Cushman Trail cleanup,” explained Davis. “And something students can do to help is spreading awareness on how important it is to recycle.”

In addition to their own projects, GHECO recently joined the Interact club in their efforts to clean up Kopachuck State Park.
All of these efforts prove that this club is without a doubt, a wonderful organization.
