Holiday Food

By far one of the key ingredients in creating a memorable holiday is food. Food has become the staple of any good holiday gathering. Whether it be a golden brown Turkey, Roasted Chestnuts, or the infamous Fruit Cake, it is certain that food plays a huge role in holiday culture and tradition. But what about the holiday cuisines that go unnoticed, or the brand new traditions that bring new food to the table? Not many talk about Jell-O Salads anymore, yet it’s still considered to be a holiday food. Green Bean Casserole, Scalloped Potatoes, Cream Pearl Onions haven’t gotten the reputations they deserve. All of these fine foods deserve some bit of spotlight. Then again, it’s ultimately the tradition that makes the food, and for most households, Cream Pearl Onions aren’t their first thought when it comes to Christmas. But if tradition is what makes the food, then that means practically anything could be considered a holiday food, if one has the tradition to support it of course. For instance, my family has a tradition where we eat Spaghetti every Thanksgiving since it was the first food we had when we moved to Washington! So really the takeaway from this is that whether you eat Pasta for Thanksgiving, or Cream Pearl Onions on Christmas, or Fruit Cake in general, any food works for the holidays.
